NEXT WAC COMMITTEE MEETING: Friday, April 11th or 18th, 2008; SO 285, 1:00 PM 3:00 PM Minimum Standards for Formal Writing Assignments in a WAC Course Jeff Galin (JG) asks the committee what should happen with this document. Should it first be incorporated as a mandatory standard, or should we test it first as a guideline to test? Patricia Patterson (PP) suggests that we first implement it as a guideline, and, if it is successful, we can implement it as a mandatory standard. Daniel Murtaugh (DM) suggests that we change the bullet points in the document to numbers to make it easier to refer to specific portions of the text. We should note in the document that the numbers do not indicate importance or priority. PP asked that the committee change the document to reflect that not all assignments are formal. Therefore, not all assignments are subject to this standard. In order to satisfy this request, the committee decides to reposition the last sentence of the first paragraph of the document: in the first position so that faculty will be able to see immediately that this document only applies to formal writing assignment. The committee discusses revising the content of the ESL asterisk but decides that there was no need for a separate statement because the body of the document sufficiently addressed our concerns. Chris Ely (CE) asks that we revise the phrasing of the bullet points to consistently offer a positive criterion before a negative one. WAC Financial Situation The WAC program has received substantial cuts in its budget. This coming year, WAC will lose $20,000. Naturally, we will need to cut some of the resources we currently offer. Below is the list of things we will need to cut: The Northern WAC Coordinator this position has not been filled for a while. It was the most natural to cut. Stipends for Tenure-line and multi-year instructors reduced from $2,000 to $1,200. Reduced Departmental Development Grants from $4,000 to $2,000. WAC in the Honors College JG asks the committee how we should go about instituting a WAC sub-committee at the honors college. These sub-committee would handle things like faculty training and the syllabus certification process. CE explains that Christian Weisser, who is currently on leave, was the person in charge of all things WAC at the honors college. Right now, we are not certain whether he will return to ý. The committee decides to wait on a decision about what will happen with WAC at the honors college until we know if Christian Weisser will come back. The issue has been tabled. Recertification Process JG asks the committee when they think the best time would be to start the recertification process and what they think the best method of collection would be. The committee decides to begin the recertification process in the Fall of 2008. They also decide that the best method for collecting and evaluating the syllabi we receive would be to have IRM create a university interface. JG will plan to meet with Lien Pham at IRM to discuss the possibility of an online interface for the WAC recertification process. Barbara Gansons Aviation Syllabus The committee is asked to review a syllabus submitted for WAC approval. The committee decides that the syllabus meets all WAC criteria. The syllabus is approved. Faculty Survey The committee discusses the most recent revision of the WAC Faculty survey. JB and Matthew Bardowell (MB) will make the suggested changes and bring the survey before the committee again for review and feedback. Other Announcements JG wins the 2007 Presidents Leadership Award for his work with WAC and the UCEW! PP mentions that the statement on WAC in the universitys core curriculum proposal is weak and should be revised.
