WAC Courses Equivalent to ENC 1102 Galin then spoke about the changes to the criteria for creating ENC 1102-equivalent courses. The only substantial change is the state’s new ruling that universities can no longer have courses with different word totals to satisfy Gordon Rule. For instance, ДѓЯѓДЋУН can no longer offer 6,000-word courses as well as 3,000-word courses. Therefore, WAC has changed its requirements to include a target of 5,000 words in writing in each WAC course. This change gives professors teaching WAC courses a guideline from which to base the writing assignments. Galin asked for the committee’s thoughts on how to include the new word statement in the catalog. The overall feeling was that the catalog should no longer include the number of words in the listing for each WAC course. The syllabi for WAC courses will state “a target of 5,000 words. Because “number of words” is no longer the key measurement of a writing course, putting number of words in the catalog takes away from the other important writing criteria for a WAC course and could be confusing to students. On the faculty side, faculty members teaching these courses will be informed on the target word requirements when submitting the course for WAC approval. Having the 5,000 words in the catalog for the benefit of the faculty doesn’t make sense either. Galin agreed with this explanation. Another change in the document is the wording on faculty training. The document states that any faculty member who is non-tenure track, must receive training to teach a WAC course. The committee argued that training should be required for tenure track faculty too because some may have never taught writing before or not in a long time. Dean Carter added that tenure-track faculty in her college who attended the writing seminars found them very helpful and told her they could not have taught the writing classes without the training. Galin explained that training is a problem because of resources, but added that the “non-tenure track” language is geared toward graduate assistants. Chair Haky suggested changing the language to state the issue about graduate assistants instead of discriminating between tenure and non-tenure track faculty. Galin added that the WAC committee agrees with the UUPC that anyone teaching a WAC course should go through training. The problem is how to present the training to so many individuals with lack of funding and time conflicts with faculty. Galin suggested a recommendation stating that the UUPC requires that there be training for all faculty teaching WAC courses, but that the definition of that training be left up to the director of WAC and the different departments so that the training may be flexible based on the number of resources available. Because of the ambiguities in the WAC ENC 1102-equivalent document, Galin requested that this document be tabled until October at which time he will present a revised document with the statements detailed above.
