Requirements for WAC Designation Discussion of the revised and simplified “Proposed Requirements for WAC Designation” was the basis for discussion. The revision was based on the discussion at the last meeting. Much discussion was devoted to fine-tuning the wording to make sure that it correctly reflects the intent of the committee and will not be open to misinterpretation. Working from a document on Jeff’s laptop that was projected onto the screen, Jeff made the changes on the fly. See attached document. Jeff Galin will submit the “Requirements” document to the UUPC as amended. It was agreed to change the working name “Procedures and Recommendations” section to Guidelines and Recommendations. Much back-and-forth was devoted to numbers 1, 6. It was agreed to keep the Requirements for WAC Designation document simple and add comments, qualifications, elaborations and expanded discussion in the Guidelines and Recommendations section. That section will be dynamically connected to the item in the finished hyper document and website format of the “Requirements” page. It was noted that this comment by Tom will be suitable to include in another document: “Keep in mind that we’re not teaching writing in a WAC course but rather teaching the subject through writing.” Tom recommended using the Tahoma font for the WAC documents. Critiquing Syllabi Discussion of the rubric for WAC course syllabi feedback revealed that it has to be updated to reflect the changes to the Requirements for WAC Designation document. Copies of Chris Ely’s History of Civilization syllabus were distributed for discussion. Discussion of the syllabus forced the group back to the Requirements for WAC designation document and additional clarifications and discussion (all of which were incorporated into the document as attached to these minutes). It was agreed that Ely’s syllabus was close to what the committee is looking for that there was not enough information to make an informed judgment. For example, the Committee would like to see at least two assignments and a discussion of how revisions will be handled. What is expected in terms of number of words per assignment? Brief supporting documents could probably address these issues. It was noted that Chris is teaching small groups in the Honors College and that may mean that he has the opportunity to do what the committee is looking for in an informal way. What Next? Jeff said that he would ask Janice Hayes if she wants to see the Requirements for WAC Designation document before we work on the next document. WAC staff will re-send syllabi under review to their designated reviewers. The reviews should be based on the new criteria as reflected in the attached “Requirements for WAC Designation.” Return reviews to Jeff Galin with copies to Nancy Rosen and Ken questioned the point of reviewing syllabi before the UUPC approves the “Requirements for WAC Designation” document. Jeff assured Ken and the committee that the UUPC will respect and WAC committees’ recommendations and will substantially adopt the “Requirements” document as submitted. In all future email concerning the WAC committee, a consistent header beginning with the word “WAC” will be used to make it easier for committee members to retrieve old emails. The WAC Committee: Jeff will ask the UUPC about cycling members on and off the WAC committee. Tom and Jeff are ex-officio members. The Chairmanship is a one-year appointment. The next meeting will take place the third week in January 2006.
