Absent: Michelle Hawkins, Jamie Cunningham. FINAL FALL 2010 WAC COMMITTEE MEETING: Friday, November 19th 10 am 12 noon I. Update on the three departmental grants: Civil, Environmental, Geomatics Engineering Met four or five times working with complex reports to finalize a rubric that will be affective in grading those papers. Chemistry Grant is moving more slowly. The rubric is not complete, but when it is, the graduate students who will be using it will be normed. Nursing Worked all summer developing a support ESL students. The scope has broadened. It was originally just dealing with grammar and in a recent meeting it was determined that more concerns need to be addressed. II. The spring 2010 WAC assessment results Jeff Galin (JG) presented graphs showing the mean scores by department based on the 12-trait rubric used in the assessment. History had the strongest results with Chemistry, Nursing, and Social Work also showing strong scores. JG will be taking the results to department heads for further discussions. Data can be very useful if the traits are those that departments value. The conversation must always start with which of the traits in the WAC rubric are useful and which their department wants to see in their students writing. Based on the results, which of the traits would their department like to improve? III. Honors College Update Many courses still need to be converted to WAC and the goal is to by next fall have everything addressed. Dan Murtaugh (DM) asked JG to describe the difference between the Gordon Rule and the WAC course. JG pointed out that the Gordon Rule only requires multiple assignments across four courses. The WAC committee enhanced the criteria. IV. Specialty Workshops Brown Bag lunch 11/9 to discuss Educational Psychologist article 12-1:30 pm in SO 105 Responding to Student Writing Workshop 10/26 12:30 2 pm in SU 223 V. Recap on National Day on Writing October 20th 2010 We had good participation in both writing contests. A judging panel selected a first, second, and third place winner in both the Letter to the President and the Flash Fiction contests. The activities throughout the day in the SO rotunda drew a substantial crowd for most of the afternoon. In the evening, at Coyote Jacks, we recognized the winners and they read their entries. We opened up the microphone to others to read their writing, as well. VI. Recognizing Departments Beyond WACidentifying, supporting, rewarding writing in these departments We have heard from other faculty that they are requiring significant amounts of writing in their course. We want to recognize departments for incorporating writing across the curriculum and identify whether faculty need additional support. JG believes that this may allow us to demonstrate that ý spends more time on writing than any other Florida university. JG and Niki Wilson (NW) have created a survey that will be sent out to all ý faculty. The survey was discussed with the committee for suggestions. The question that the committee thought might be needed is whether faculty are satisfied with the quality of writing. Allen Smith (AS) suggested that we call the rubric a writing rubric. Julia Mason (JM) recommended that we ask, Are you using a rubric for improving or assessing writing in the classroom? AS recommended that we move difficulty questions, like the one regarding the rubric, later in the survey when participants will be invested in completing it. JM recommended that we add short stories, poems, or other creative assignments to the list of assignments, as well as other. JG closed the discussion stating, we just want a sense of what kind of writing is going on out there. NW will work with John Cahill to get the survey site created and then an email will go out to all university faculty. VII. Final Remarks and Questions Su questioned Is the Honors College interested in an assessment of the quality of writing done in the Honors Projects? Su also asked, Can the WAC Program support the undergraduate research initiative? JG said that he would speak to Dean Pratt regarding these questions. 13S[ 1 F H Z [ v -0HŶvg[gvg[g[gvgvghrCOJQJ^JaJhY&h `OJQJ^JaJhY&h `5OJQJ^JaJhY&hY&5OJQJ^JaJhrCh `>*OJQJ^JaJhrChY&>*OJQJ^JaJhY&hY&OJQJ^JaJh `OJQJ^JaJhY&h `5OJQJ^JaJhY&h `H*OJQJ^JaJhY&h `OJQJ^JaJ >RS 3 Y Z . 9 ? ,-H^gd ` & Fgd ` & Fgd `gd `$a$gd `H OPBKL!z& & F gdY&h^hgdY&gdY&8^8gd ` & F gd `gd ` & Fgd `PQABJKLN3Qnyz࢓ࢆznbhY&OJQJ^JaJh `OJQJ^JaJhfOJQJ^JaJhrC6OJQJ^JaJhfh `OJQJ^JaJhrCOJQJ^JaJ"hY&h `5H*OJQJ^JaJhY&h `5OJQJ^JaJhY&hY&5OJQJ^JaJhY&h `OJQJ^JaJhY&h `6OJQJ^JaJ"i%'(ǸhY&h `OJQJ^JaJhY&hY&OJQJ^JaJhrCOJQJ^JaJhY&hY&OJQJ^JaJhY&hY&5OJQJ^JaJhY&5OJQJ^JaJ&'(gd `gdY&21h:p `/ =!"#$% ^ 666666666vvvvvvvvv666666>6666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666hH6666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666662 0@P`p2( 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p8XV~_HmH nH sH tH @`@ F2NormalCJ_HaJmH sH tH DA D Default Paragraph FontRiR Table Normal4 l4a (k (No List HH I Balloon TextCJOJQJ^JaJPK![Content_Types].xmlj0Eжr(΢Iw},-j4 wP-t#bΙ{UTU^hd}㨫)*1P' ^W0)T9<l#$yi};~@(Hu* Dנz/0ǰ $ X3aZ,D0j~3߶b~i>3\`?/[G\!-Rk.sԻ..a濭?PK!֧6 _rels/.relsj0 }Q%v/C/}(h"O = C?hv=Ʌ%[xp{۵_Pѣ<1H0ORBdJE4b$q_6LR7`0̞O,En7Lib/SeеPK!kytheme/theme/themeManager.xml M @}w7c(EbˮCAǠҟ7՛K Y, e.|,H,lxɴIsQ}#Ր ֵ+!,^$j=GW)E+& 8PK!Ptheme/theme/theme1.xmlYOo6w toc'vuر-MniP@I}úama[إ4:lЯGRX^6؊>$ !)O^rC$y@/yH*񄴽)޵߻UDb`}"qۋJחX^)I`nEp)liV[]1M<OP6r=zgbIguSebORD۫qu gZo~ٺlAplxpT0+[}`jzAV2Fi@qv֬5\|ʜ̭NleXdsjcs7f W+Ն7`g ȘJj|h(KD- dXiJ؇(x$( :;˹!
