This period represents one of the most vibrant in of modern British literature, notable for rapid changes in technology, industry, and empire, with Britain expanding its role as the worlds leading imperial power while also experiencing challenges from Germany and the Untied States, and going through considerable social turbulence at home. Covering major examples of the various genres including several distinct kinds of Victorian novelbildungsroman, gothic, and Imperial adventure storyas well as short story, criticism, and poetry, the course will explore the relation between literature and its social and historical contexts. The themes to be examined in the course include the growth of urbanized society during and after the Industrial Revolution; the dramatic expansion of British and European empires; and the emerging feminist movement, and their reflection in literature and culture. In addition to studying the changing attitudes towards gender roles and constructions of sexual identity in the period, we shall be examining influence of class on British literature and culture of the Victorian age. Code of Academic Integrity policy Students at ý are expected to maintain the highest ethical standards. Academic dishonesty is considered a serious breach of these ethical standards, because it interferes with the University mission to provide a high quality education in which no student enjoys an unfair advantage over any other. Academic dishonesty is also destructive of the University community, which is grounded in a system of mutual trust and places high value on personal integrity and individual responsibility. Harsh penalties are associated with academic dishonesty. For more information, see the Code of Academic Integrity in the University Regulations at HYPERLINK "http://www.fau.edu/regulations/chapter4/4.001_Code_of_Academic_Integrity.pdf"http://www.fau.edu/regulations/chapter4/4.001_Code_of_Academic_Integrity.pdf . Course Policies punctual attendance is required at all classes. Each unexcused absence beyond the third will automatically lower your course grade for the semester by 1/3 letter grade. That means that if you would have earned a B, two unexcused absences after the third will lower this grade to a C+. More than five absences will automatically result in failing the course. * Except when University attendance policy supersedes this policy, as stated in relevant Provosts memoranda: HYPERLINK "http://www.fau.edu/provost/files/religious2011.pdf"http://www.fau.edu/provost/files/religious2011.pdf and HYPERLINK "http://www.fau.edu/provost/files/studentabsences.pdf"http://www.fau.edu/provost/files/studentabsences.pdf. Two late arrivals or unexcused early departures will constitute one absence. Please ensure that all cellphones, pagers, and other electronic devices are turned off during class! Points will be deducted from students who use cellphones to call or send text messages during class. All written work must be turned in at the beginning of the class period on the days specified in the syllabus. Late work will not be accepted under any circumstances. I do not accept e-mail submissions of written work. I do not accept work left under my office door or in my mailbox. All work must be handed over in person. There will be no make-ups permitted for tests or quizzes. Quizzes must be taken at the beginning of the class period on the day and time specified in the syllabus. The format of the course is lecture and discussion: this means, I expect each student to participate in class discussions. Obviously, this also means you must keep up with the reading. As you will see, a significant portion of the final grade will be determined by your involvement in class discussion. For the team class presentation, all members of the team must be present at the class when the presentation is scheduled. If you do not show up for class on the day of your presentation, you will automatically fail this assignment and lower the grade for the whole team. If you have questions or concerns about the coursework or your performance in the class, please make an appointment to meet with me during my office hours.
