Course Description: This upper division undergraduate course will expose students to the dominant sociological theories of workers and class relations under historical capitalism, to the forces driving contemporary processes of economic globalization, and how workers situated within specific sectors of the economy are affected by and respond to processes of globalization. Course Objectives: Students will understand both Marxist and Polanyian conceptualizations of workers and class relations under capitalism Students will understanding contemporary scholarly debates over the primary structures contemporary processes of economic globalization Students will understand the social and political forces driving processes of globalization Students will understand the social contradictions of globalization and the impact of globalization on the rights and plight of workers and working-class communities across the globe Students will become familiar with the plight of workers in specific sectors of the world economy, including the extractive, agro-food, auto, clothing, retail and financial services industries.
