Being a /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/first-generation Mexican-American student can take a toll on someone. There are high expectations that come with being a /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/first-generation student. Some people, including me and perhaps you as well, can become unmotivated by these lo/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/fty expectations. It's strange since I would have thought that my desire to avoid disappointing my parents would be enough to motivate me to work. This lack o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/f motivation then /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/feeds into low sel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/f-esteem. This constant state o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/f dwelling on onesel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/f is not very e/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/f/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/ficient so let鈥檚 talk about it more.听
How do Sel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/f-Esteem and Motivation Work Together?听
Low sel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/f-esteem can be triggered by many di/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/f/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/ferent events and it can come and go in waves. Everyone has been a/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/f/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/fected by low sel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/f-esteem, whether it was because o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/f someone making /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/fun o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/f the sparkly light-up shoes you wore in elementary school, which now makes picking a pair o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/f shoes in the morning be/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/fore class the hardest decision o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/f your li/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/fe, or because you /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/failed your /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/first college exam because you had no idea what to expect. Low sel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/f-esteem can give people the mindset o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/f 鈥淚鈥檓 not good enough. There is no point in trying.鈥 This lack o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/f motivation leads us to persuade ourselves that we won鈥檛 succeed in whatever it may be. A healthy sense o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/f sel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/f-worth allows us to receive love, respect, and trust /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/from ourselves and /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/from our parents, partners, and /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/friends. This is crucial when establishing stable relationships. Researchers have /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/found a positive correlation between low sel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/f-esteem and depression. Being in a state o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/f depression causes us to encounter mood-congruent memories, or memories that are in line with how we are currently /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/feeling. In this case, because we are in a depressive state, we are more likely to keep /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/falling down the rabbit hole as we are constantly thinking about the time our dog died or the time we /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/felt alone because our best /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/friend moved across the country. On the contrary, people with strong sel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/f-esteem tend to be happier and less stressed. Because we know we are capable o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/f succeeding, we are motivated to participate in social situations and study /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/for exams in order to maintain this positive sel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/f-perception. But without motivation, we will /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/find ourselves living the same negative cycle because there are no goals to be achieved.听
How to Strengthen Sel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/f-Esteem and Motivation听
As cheesy as it sounds, give yoursel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/f a daily pep talk! Part o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/f developing yoursel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/f is establishing the roles you play. The cliche phrase 鈥/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/fake it until you make it鈥 can also be tweaked to say 鈥/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/fake it until you become it.鈥 When we act a part we will gradually become it. I/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/f we tell ourselves that we are good enough, we are worthy o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/f love, we are smart enough, then we will eventually speak it into existence. It might be a little awkward at /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/first but patience is key!听
One way to build motivation is by creating a vision board. Visualizing your goals helps with decision-making and values that will lead you to where you want to be. It can be as simple as creating a Pinterest board! For this technique to be the most e/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/f/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/ficient, I recommend creating a tangible vision board that can be seen every day.听
Talking to yoursel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/f kindly will help with both sel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/f-esteem and motivation. Telling ourselves that we can do it, or as I like to say in Spanish s铆 se puede will help build our con/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/fidence and capability o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/f accomplishing something. Try to avoid using words that belittle yoursel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/f such as stupid, dumb, or not good enough. Instead o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/f constantly criticizing yoursel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/f, be your own cheerleader! It is important to note that building good sel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/f-esteem and consistent motivation will take e/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/f/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/fort and time. Building good habits might be challenging at /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/sisepuede/first, but all good things come with time.
