Social Media and How It A/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/fects Our Sel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f Image

Social Media

With the increased use o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f social media in many people's lives on a day-to-day basis, sel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f-image portrayed through social networks has seemed to change as well, in/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/fluencing more than just new trends. O/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/ften a more "romanticized" version o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f one's li/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/fe is presented through the eyes o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f a phone camera; at /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/first glance, this may seem bene/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/ficial, but this phenomenon has considerable drawbacks. I am no stranger to the harm/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/ful e/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/fects o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f the multitude o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f posts put out by the millions o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/fitness in/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/fluencers detailing every green smoothie they drink while unboxing a PR package /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/from a name-brand clothing company in their per/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/fect Los Angeles apartment.

The /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/following blog includes personal and pro/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/fessional opinions on how social media has shaped the newer generation's perspective o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f their sel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f-image, including both the positive and negative impacts.

So, who are these people, and how do they gain this in/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/fluence?

O/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/ften, many o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f these individuals with a /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/follower count post speci/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/fic content to meticulously curate a sel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f-brand around their particular niche.听 Apps such as Instagram and TikTok enable this sel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f-promotion by making it extremely easy to achieve a lot o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f attention in a short amount o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f time. However, only seeing these care/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/fully selected positive moments in an in/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/fluencer's day has ended up causing many consumers o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f this content to question their own identity and worth. In a study done by Scope, almost hal/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f the 1,200 18-34-year-old's /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/felt unattractive when they looked at their social media /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/feed, and in another study, around 60% o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f those surveyed "/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/felt their own achievements were inadequate when compared to the posts o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f others." Even more concerning is that other research has shown intensi/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/fied exposure and overuse o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f social media has contributed to several psychological disorders, mental health risks, and physical health risks such as:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Jealousy
  • Loneliness or /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/feeling o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f isolation
  • Sel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f-harm
  • Poor body image
  • Eating disorders such as anorexia
  • Disrupted sleep

However, the most alarming observation is the rise in normalization o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f these side e/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/fects o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f social media. I o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/ften see and hear people explain their depression or poor body image due to posts they have seen online, whether /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/from in/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/fluencers or their /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/friends. Despite this, they continue to spend hours on social media comparing themselves and judging others, even without realizing it. I am no exception - the number o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f "likes" I receive on my post causes me to question the worthiness o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f my image, and I constantly wonder i/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f a better picture or a better edit would have /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/fit the arti/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/ficial standards o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f a "good" social media post. Leeching o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f this now common desire to alter photos, many editing apps are widely available /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/for use just a download away, making it easy to see a picture and assume that is how that person looks all the time. It is crucial to understand that most images posted on the internet are captured at the per/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/fect angle and o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/ften modi/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/fied a/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/fterward to eliminate any possible blemishes.听 In contrast, editing can be help/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/ful i/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f used appropriately with an avid understanding that the photo is modi/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/fied.

However, even with its many downsides, using social media is not always inherently wrong. There are many bene/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/fits o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f media, such as:

  • 听Interaction with /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/friends and other users
  • Expression o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f opinions and ideas
  • Opportunity to learn new things
  • Development o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f group identities (such as within personal interests or culture)

Studies have shown that social media has led to stronger bonds and more /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/friendships/relationships being /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/formed. Media has also been able to link like-minded individuals by o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/fering plat/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/forms to interact and show o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f creativity and intelligence. Additionally, /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/for those who struggle with socialization, social networks provide a relatively easy way to express themselves and grow social skills and /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/find out who they are. In a study done by the University o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f Pennsylvania, the results yielded that cutting down social media use to around 30 minutes per day averages the most advantages to one's daily li/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/fe. This reduction to 30 minutes reduces the FOMO (or /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/fear o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f missing out) that people experience when they spend several hours on social media. This time limit also curbs the issues associated with excessive social media use, such as "loneliness, anxiety, depression, and sleep problems" ("Social Media and Mental Health"). By practicing sel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f-controlled social media use, one can better realize when they have spent enough time scrolling and need to unplug and see things /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/from a more authentic point o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f view.

Looking past the manu/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/factured nature o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f the posts seen on social media and understanding that most o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f the content only shows the most /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/fun, exciting moments o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f someone's li/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/fe is so important. It is exceptionally simple to misinterpret in/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/formation on the internet, /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/form opinions, and judge based on those in/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/ferences. That one girl who seems to have a per/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/fect li/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/fe and no /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/flaws portrayed on social media may be su/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/fering behind the scenes in ways nobody could have ever predicted. Even /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/from personal experience, I only post the most exciting and best pictures o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f mysel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f and my li/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/fe, yet o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f course, I have plenty o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/flaws. We must realize that the image we see on social media is not real li/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/fe. By reducing time spent on social media, you can di/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/ferentiate the genuine versus /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/fake experiences and improve your mental health.

As a takeaway, I challenge you to reduce your screen time and time spent on social media and assess your /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/feelings towards yoursel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f, not only within emotions but also your sel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/ourselfimage/f-image.
