The Child Within You

Protect your inner child.

As a college student, I see caring /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/for mysel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f as a privilege rather than something necessary and vital. I o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/ften tell mysel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f that I will start eating healthy when I have the time and energy these require. Poor mental and physical health among college students has become so normalized in our society that we o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/ften joke about having ramen noodles /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/for dinner /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/for the /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/fi/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/fth night in a row and laugh it o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f. Similarly, I closely listen to my peers talk about getting a /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/few hours to no sleep every night, which I also do, and it鈥檚 seen as nothing out o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f the ordinary.听 Many adults see these and other unhealthy behaviors as the standard way o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f living /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/for college students and genuinely believe this is per/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/fectly normal when it really isn鈥檛. Another incorrect belie/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f is that these habits are not so bad /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/for our physical health, since most o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f us are young enough to get away with any damage that could possibly be caused by unhealthy li/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/festyles. The belie/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f that college students are supposed to neglect their physical and mental health because we don鈥檛 have any time is embedded in our society and as a result, it鈥檚 also embedded in most o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f us.

In order to solve many o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f these problems, we resort to advice /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/from our dear /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/friend Google. Most o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f these articles imply we have plenty o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/free time and that we should use it to exercise, talk to /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/friends, eat healthily, and see a therapist all at once. This would make great advice i/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f articles that we /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/find online only told us how to unlock the superpower that time management is or perhaps i/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f they included that doing even one o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f these instead o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f all o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f them at once would be okay too. ( What I鈥檓 actually saying is just throw these articles away and read advice /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/from Thrive instead). However, we do not try one o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f these and slowly build our way up, but instead, we /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/frequently try to achieve the impossible. Every month I set new goals to mysel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f that incorporates exercise, a good amount o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f social interaction, a mental health check-up, a limit on the amount o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f ramen noodle cups per week. As the weeks pass and I restart my goals every Monday, I /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/find mysel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f slacking every time. These goals may seem simple /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/for some, but /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/for others, they鈥檙e unattainable and leave a bad taste o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/failure in our mouths.

Lately, I鈥檝e been thinking o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f mysel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f as a child I must protect and take care o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f, without demanding much o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f her and instead, taking measures to keep her alive, awake, and understood. I鈥檓 starting to see the act o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f caring /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/for mysel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f as something I must do, rather than a privilege I only get to experience sometimes. Equally, I鈥檝e been trying to become 鈥渢he best version mysel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f鈥 by taking steps to succeed rather than diving in and thinking I will be that person all o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f a sudden. Not neglecting your needs and demanding the impossible /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/from yoursel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f by itsel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f is an act o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f sel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f-preservation and one that could make a huge di/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/ference.听

Some o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f the things I鈥檝e been doing in order to make this change revolve around taking a break when I need it, saying 鈥渘o鈥 when I need it, and spending at least one day o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f the week with someone that I care about. Overworking yoursel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f might always seem like the best way to go about passing your classes, but taking breaks be/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/fore you get to the point when it gets too much is the key. I am always overscheduling and not taking into account the /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/fact that I need time /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/for mysel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f, so I say yes to every event that comes my way. I鈥檝e been practicing saying 鈥渘o鈥 to things without /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/feeling bad about it and reassuring mysel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f that it鈥檚 okay to say no sometimes, and the people that care about me will understand. This is another way to know your limits and every college student should practice the art o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f saying no. Furthermore, even i/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f I have a packed week, I leave time to see a /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/friend /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/for at least a /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/few hours. This helps me take my mind o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f school and regain some energy /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/for the rest o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f my day or week.听

Li/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/fe as a college student /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/feels as though there is not a middle ground; you either have to neglect your physical and mental health entirely in order to survive or /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/forget to know your limits, set too many unattainable goals /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/for yoursel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f, and end up blaming yoursel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/for not living up to these godly standards. Both o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f these options may end up introducing themselves in our lives as sel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f-destruction, which is why we should always turn to the opposite. Sel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f-preservation is de/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/fined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary as 鈥渁 natural or instinctive tendency to act so as to preserve one鈥檚 own existence.鈥 1 Sel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f-preservation is the middle ground and it鈥檚 the core o/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f surviving as a college student. Sel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f-preservation is knowing what is unhealthy and taking your needs as well as your limits into consideration when setting monthly, weekly and daily goals /thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/for yoursel/thrive/students/thrive-thursdays/child/f.
