Rich Roots: Fulbright Student Scholar Inspired by the Biodiversity of Costa Rica

Schmidt College of Science student Allison Centeno finds Mother Nature to be an endless source of inspiration and curiosity. Growing up in Limon, Costa Rica, she was surrounded by the mesmerizing beauty of its misty rainforests, pristine beaches, majestic volcanoes and abundant wildlife. That spark is something she carries with her today and always.

鈥淚 believe inspiration is something that I continue to find every day, whether I鈥檓 in the water, surrounded by nature or learning something new about this fascinating field,鈥 shared Centeno. 鈥淚 also draw inspiration from my colleagues and the incredible work they do.鈥

Centeno is pursuing a master鈥檚 degree in marine science and oceanography (MSO) at 大象传媒鈥檚 School of Environmental, Coastal and Ocean Sustainability (ECOS) within the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science as a 2024 Fulbright Student Scholar. Allison Centeno

鈥淚t is a tremendous honor to be awarded this prestigious scholarship,鈥 expressed Centeno. 鈥淚t makes me feel that my hard work and dedication has been recognized, and it provides me with the opportunity to contribute to my country through the knowledge I will gain from this experience. At the same time, it is a significant responsibility that I take seriously.鈥

Centeno鈥檚 research focuses on understanding how certain oceanographic conditions affect the foraging behavior and movement patterns of sea turtles and their interactions with fishing activities, using satellite imagery. Currently, there are significant knowledge gaps, and more research is needed to create a more comprehensive understanding of these interactions.

鈥淚 aim to deepen my expertise in biological oceanography and techniques like remote sensing, which are highly relevant in today鈥檚 marine science research,鈥 stated Centeno. 鈥淥ne of my goals is to study pelagic ecosystems, which requires more complex approaches. During my master鈥檚 program, I hope to explore these ecosystems and later apply this knowledge to tropical marine environments and marine corridors.鈥

With the guidance of one of her co-advisors, John Baldwin, Ph.D., interim director of ECOS, associate dean for faculty development, and professor of biological sciences, Centeno is finalizing her research plans.听

鈥淒r. Baldwin has helped me at every stage of this journey, from assisting with logistical aspects to holding regular meetings to discuss my academic goals, as well as how to make this master鈥檚 program a transformative experience,鈥 noted Centeno. 鈥淗e has connected me with excellent professionals and has provided immense support, especially as I navigate life as an international student adapting to a new country and graduate student life.鈥

Last semester, Centeno was honored to receive the Graduate Dean鈥檚 Fellowship award. Following her anticipated graduation from Florida Atlantic in Summer 2026, she is interested in pursuing a Ph.D.听

鈥淢y career goal is to work on pelagic ecosystems and their interactions with fisheries,鈥 said Centeno. 鈥淚 also hope to contribute to marine science in Central America.鈥

A program of the U.S. Department of State, the Fulbright Program provides talented students, scholars, teachers, artists and professionals in all fields with the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research abroad. Together, Fulbright Scholars aim to exchange ideas, build people-to-people connections and work to address complex global challenges.
