These positions provide valuable experience in environmental sciences, conservation, ecology, and resource management in South Florida. The Environmental Sciences Program promotes internships for its students because internships are a form of experiential learning, where students learn by doing an activity. South Florida is rich in institutions involved in resource management and research so it is an ideal place to have students engaged as part of their academic studies, in experiential learning. Students should work early on with their advisor in Environmental Sciences to ensure that the appropriate academic credits are applied to a particular internship. Internships Reporting Policy Initial Meeting An initial meeting will occur between the intern (ý student), the agency supervisor, and the faculty advisor (ý faculty member responsible for the DIS credit) The purpose of the meeting will be to discuss the objectives, timeline and tasks to be performed for the internship. The meeting will also clarify the responsibilities of the student, advisor, and agency supervisor. This meeting will occur within the first month of the internship. Single page proposal of internship will be signed by the three parties and copied to the ES program. Monthly Progress Reports The intern will submit a brief description of their work to both their agency supervisor and faculty advisor. A 1-2 page bulleted list of accomplishments from the past month and objectives for the next month which will be due on the first of every month. Final Report. The intern will submit a short written report and/or endproduct, detailing the accomplishments of the semester. This report will be submitted to the agency supervisor, the faculty advisor, and the E.S. Program This report is required along with the monthly progress reports for the DIS credits. Performance Evaluation Intern Supervisor: A confidential letter/email evaluating the performance of the intern during the semester time period will be submitted at the end of the semester to the faculty advisor from the agency supervisor. This evaluation will serve to monitor the quality of the internships and offer ways to improve them. Student Intern: A confidential letter/email evaluating the internship during the semester time period will be submitted at the end of the semester to the faculty advisor from the intern.
