What is R1?
To qualify for R1 status from the universities must meet stringent such as the number of research doctorates awarded and total research expenditures. The Carnegie Classification was created by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education in 1970 to support its program of research and policy analysis. The organization updates its list of designated institutions every three years.
