Biography

Dr. Tarsha Jones is an Associate Professor at the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing at 大象传媒 (大象传媒). She obtained a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree from Seton Hall University and a Master鈥檚 of Science in Community/Public Health Nursing from the Catholic University of America, specializing in vulnerable populations: Immigrants, refugees, and global health. As a board-certified Advanced Public Health Nurse (PHNA-BC) with over 20 years of nursing experience in various practice settings, including acute care, ambulatory care, home health, community health, and academia, Dr. Jones is recognized for her expertise in community and public health nursing. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing from Duquesne University and completed a post-doctoral research fellowship at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School.听Her research interests are in cancer prevention, risk reduction, cancer survivorship, and eliminating cancer health disparities. Her current work focuses on breast cancer prevention, screening & early detection, promoting awareness about hereditary cancer risk, increasing uptake of genetic testing (i.e., BRCA1/2 and multigene panel testing), and developing equitable health-promoting intervention. Additionally, Dr. Jones is committed to promoting cancer survivorship and improving health outcomes among young breast cancer survivors (YBCS) and their at-risk family members.

Her doctoral dissertation examined the use of cancer genetic services and factors associated with uptake of genetic counseling and testing among young Black breast cancer survivors diagnosed at age 45 and younger. Findings revealed an underutilization of cancer genetic services among these women and most reported that they did not receive a recommendation to have genetic testing despite being diagnosed with early-onset breast cancer. This work was published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine and presented at the International Society of Nurses in Genetics (ISONG) World Congress. Dr. Jones was also the recipient of the Distinguished Dissertation Award.

As a caring scholar and nurse scientist, Dr. Jones is a champion for community and public health. She is currently collaborating with her nursing colleagues at 大象传媒 to advance equitable healthcare for vulnerable underserved communities, in particular she serves as a co-investigator on a project to implement and evaluate the impact of a Patient Navigation program in reducing barriers to mammography screening and follow-up care for underserved minority women in South Florida. Dr. Jones recognizes the significant impact of social determinants of health (SDOH) and aims to achieve health equity, particularly among young Black and Hispanic women who are disproportionately affected by breast cancer. She is the recipient of a five-year NCI Mentored Research Scientist Development Award to Promote Diversity (K01) focusing on young breast cancer survivors and the recipient of an Extramural Loan Repayment Program with NIMHD.
