Bio-Inspired Self-Burying AUV
Department of Ocean and Mechanical Engineering
Overview
In between missions, autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) typically need to dock or be retrieved out of the water. However, such operations can be timely and difficult to complete. For this project, we design, fabricate, and test a bio-inspired underwater vehicle with self-burying capability that allows for extended deployment by withstanding ocean current and appearing undetectable.
Community Benefit: This project aims to develop a self-burying AUV for various marine applications to remain in the same location between missions and withstand forces. This could aid in long term AUV monitoring of marine ecosystem vitals or potential defense applications where it would remain undetectable under the sand.
