About The Program

The Deborah L. Floyd Scholars Fund supports Ph.D. Higher Education students in their pursuit of scholarly and leadership success by providing mentorship opportunities. The Floyd Scholars Fund is about building a community of scholars who are both mentored and pledge to 鈥減ass it on鈥 by mentoring others. By providing funds for research and mentorship, the program ensures that the lack of financial resources will not be a barrier for students who want to be engaged with research scholars and leaders. It is the program鈥檚 goal to provide mentoring opportunities for students, and an opportunity in the future for Floyd Scholars to contribute back to the program by serving as mentors. Each Floyd Scholar is mentored by outstanding research scholars and leaders in colleges and universities.

The program encompasses a vision that is ever evolving and will emerge stronger and more sustainable because of shared engagement and ownership from donors, mentors, and Floyd Scholars. Dr. Deborah L. Floyd launched the Fund that will grow during her lifetime to leave a legacy at Florida Atlantic that focuses on student success and mentoring in higher education. It鈥檚 a Fund that will be a catalyst for partnerships focused on mentoring and support of leaders and researchers in colleges and universities.

Each year, a faculty and alumni committee awards travel scholarships to Floyd Scholars in recognition of their academic standing, potential to benefit from mentoring and pledge to give back as a mentor, research aspirations, and resource needs.

Mentorship matters in higher education and provides a supportive network for emerging scholars. The purpose of the Floyd Scholars program is to foster connections for higher education scholars to become strong leaders in the field and for them to 鈥減ass it on鈥 by providing mentorship and their expertise to other scholars. By supporting the Floyd Scholars program, greater opportunities through mentorship activities can be fostered for emerging scholars and leaders in higher education.

Plan

As the Floyd Scholars鈥 Fund grows, the program aims to do the following:

  1. Provide funding for students to travel and attend research conferences and benefit from scholars and career mentors.
  2. Connect Floyd Scholars with higher education leaders and research mentors who are committed to nurturing Floyd Scholars throughout their studies and as they advance in their careers.
  3. Create and identify new mentorship opportunities for Floyd Scholars and ways they may 鈥減ass it on鈥 and mentor others
  4. Foster a mentoring community of support and growth for scholars and emerging leaders in colleges and universities.

Students selected for the Floyd Scholars Award accepted the charge of helping the Floyd Scholars program grow by sustaining engagement with mentors, finding and leading new opportunities for mentoring activities, supporting future Floyd Scholars and more.
