Graduate Studies

Our M.A. in Languages, Linguistics and Comparative Literature (LLCL) prepares students for careers in teaching, government and public service, translation and interpretation, publishing, cultural and literary work, international companies, and NGOs.听 Many of our students continue on to Ph.D. programs in discipline-specific areas or comparative & cultural studies, including the Comparative Studies Ph.D. Program at 大象传媒.

We accept graduate students for Fall and Spring enrollments (Fall 25 application deadline is March 1, 2025).

Applicants who do not require a visa and plan to study part-time can start as non-degree and take up to two classes (6 credits) before applying to the M.A. program. If admitted to the M.A., the 6 non-degree credits would be counted toward the degree. This option may also work for those domestic applicants who do not fully meet admission requirements (e.g., because of a low undergraduate GPA), domestic career-change applicants without any background in languages or linguistics, and domestic applicants who miss the application deadline. Non-degree applications can be processed as late as the first week of August for Fall 25 classes. Please reach out to LLCL Graduate Studies if interested in this option.

Most students complete the M.A. degree in two years. Students choose either a thesis track (30 credits) or a non-thesis track (36 credits) for one of the available M.A. concentrations:

Students in the Linguistics concentration听can pursue:

  • Combined BA-to-MA degree option: 听Current BA in LLCL: Linguistics students can apply to the BA-to-MA program. Combined degree students take up to 12 graduate credits in their senior year that double-count toward both degrees, allowing students to complete the M.A. in under two years.
  • Graduate Certificate in ESL Studies : Five courses can double-count toward the degree and the certificate. (Students in other LLCL concentrations are able to take two or more classes toward the certificate during the M.A. program and can finish the certificate coursework as non-degree students).

Graduate students take a combination of in-person and online classes. In-person classes meet at/after 4pm on the Boca Raton campus. Students can attend in-person classes remotely via Zoom if they cannot come to campus.
