(January 14, 2019) The Center for Body, Mind and Culture of ýs Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters is hosting a conference on Bodies of Design, on Thursday, Jan. 24 and Friday, Jan. 25 at 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus. There is no fee to register, however advanced registration is advised. To register, email bodymindculture@gmail.com. Recent developments in technology have significantly transformed our modes of communication, behavior and experience, including the experience of our own bodies. This conference will explore issues relating to the somaesthetic dimensions of technology with particular attention to questions of design. Technology has always influenced the arts and humanities as well as everyday life, said Richard Shusterman, Ph.D., Dorothy F. Schmidt Eminent Scholar in the Humanities and director of the Center for Body, Mind and Culture. Just think of the transformations in learning, literature and other arts created by the invention of the printing press. But with todays increasingly rapid technological development, it is especially important to examine the impact of technological design on the somatic dimensions of experience in the arts and our art of living. Conference presentations will include such topics as virtual reality, interactive design, technological design for user experience, and the uses of technology in art, sport, and cosmetics such as fragrance. Distinguished scholars from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Spain and China will be among the speakers. This is the 15th international conference of the Center for Body, Mind, and Culture since its founding in 2007.
