(February 17, 2020) The Center for Body, Mind and Culture and the Asian Studies Program in ýs Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters is hosting a conference on Bodies of Buddhism: Somaesthetic Explorations on Thursday, February 27 and Friday, February 28 at 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus. There is no fee to register, however advanced registration is advised. To register, email bodymindculture@gmail.com. The conference will examine Buddhism from an embodied perspective that opens new pathways for reexamining the varieties of ways in which this religion has been practiced in different times and places. This somaesthetic focus paints a more complete picture of how Buddhist practices connect to issues of humanism, social justice, the arts, and the art of living. We are delighted to explore the embodied dimension of Buddhist thought and practice with an international and transdisciplinary group of experts, said Richard Shusterman, Dorothy F. Schmidt Eminent Scholar in the Humanities and director of the Center for Body, Mind and Culture. It is a special pleasure to collaborate on this project with Ken Holloway, ýs Levenson Chair in Asian Studies and associate director of our Center, and an expert in Buddhist thought. The conference will include presentations from international scholars based in Japan, Thailand, Spain, England, and Canada, as well as scholars from excellent American academic institutions such as Vanderbilt University and Carleton College. Topics include meditation and monastic training, bodily cultivation and spiritual awakening, gender issues in Buddhist practice, Buddhist theories of the senses, of dreaming, of the role of pain and of the aesthetics of disgust. This is the 16th international conference of the Center for Body, Mind, and Culture since its founding in 2007.
